Scholarships

The AFI Conservatory offers scholarship support to first and second year Fellows. The Conservatory offers donor-supported scholarships to incoming and current Fellows based on both financial need and demonstrated talent. Varying scholarship awards are available in each discipline, with awards ranging from $1,500 to full tuition.

Scholarships are awarded to first year Fellows and are renewable in the second year provided you maintain satisfactory academic progress. Scholarship applications are submitted through the online admission application only. If you wish to apply for AFI Scholarship funds, you must submit the AFI Conservatory scholarship application. Download the pdf application, complete it and the required essay(s), and upload it in pdf format within the online application.

Scholarship selection is determined by the Conservatory Financial Aid and Awards Committee with advisement from select scholarship donors on a case-by-case basis.

The following scholarships are distributed by the Conservatory. Do not contact the donor directly for scholarship information.

Named scholarships (including the Jerry Bruckheimer Producing Scholarship, Mosie Hackett Endowed Fellowship, Jeffrey Katzenberg Fellowship, Lennie Marvin Scholarship in Production Design, Time Warner Fellowship, Gary Winick Scholarship and Women In Film/Tichi Wilkerson Kassel Endowed Scholarship, among others) are awarded as part of the general scholarship application process. There are a number of scholarships available that have unique requirements including:

  • The Paul and Monica Bancroft Family Foundation Scholarship, which supports one African American female Fellow annually.
  • The Green Foundation Scholarships, which are awarded to aspiring minority filmmakers from communities traditionally underserved in film and television.
  • The Sloan Foundation Scholarship, funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, which is awarded to an incoming first year Fellow with a science background and an interest in making science-related films. More information on the Sloan film program at the AFI Conservatory can be found here (LINK).
  • The Jane Stewart Endowed Scholarship, which provides tuition relief to one female Fellow studying in the Production Design discipline.
  • The Tom Yoda Scholarship Award, given to five Fellows — a first year Fellow from Japan, and four non-Japanese Fellows in their first or second year of study.

Although the Conservatory does offer scholarships, we encourage applicants to research and apply for any private scholarships for which they may be eligible.
