Deconstructing the Half Hour Comedy

Tuesday, October 8, 2024 – 6:00 p.m. PT

Please join AFI Screenwriting faculty Mark Amato and Lauren Wells for an in-depth analysis of a classic episode of the series WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS. Learn the art of constructing a successful set-up, build and pay-off in half-hour comedy. Lauren, staff writer on WWDITS, and Mark will cover the structure and planning that goes into making an episode work.

Mark Amato has been a writer on sitcoms like SUITE LIFE ON DECK, sci-fi dramas such as MUTANT X and animated shows like MEN IN BLACK. He has also written 10 romantic comedies for Freeform, Hallmark Channel and Netflix, including ROYAL MATCHMAKER and IT’S CHRISTMAS, EVE. He has sold over a half-dozen original pilots throughout his career.

Lauren Wells is a screenwriter who most recently wrote on FX’s Emmy®-nominated television show WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS. Prior to that, she worked in support staff roles on shows such as UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT, HAPPY!, LUKE CAGE, JESSICA JONES and ANGELYNE, among others.
