THE GREEN FILM SCHOOL ALLIANCE

The AFI Conservatory is among the eleven founding film schools from across the nation that have united to form The Green Film School Alliance (GFSA). GFSA integrates industry-level sustainable production practices into their programs and committing to bringing common language, standards and tools to their educational institutions. GFSA is built around specific actions aimed to reduce the impacts of physical production on the environment, a willingness to share best practices and a pledge to further sustainable initiatives at their schools.

Achieving this nationwide alliance began in June 2020 when the founding member schools teamed up with the Sustainable Production Alliance – a consortium of the world’s leading film, television and streaming companies (Amazon Studios, Amblin Partners, Disney, Fox Corporation, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Participant Media, Sony Pictures Entertainment, ViacomCBS and WarnerMedia) – to incorporate sustainability into their production programs and develop resources for all film students.

Together, a new student checklist was created called the PEACHy, modeled after a student version of the industry standard PEACH (Production Environmental Actions Checklist) and AFI’s internal Green Initiative and Green Seal programs. It is used to help standardize practices across schools and train filmmakers for future studio jobs. PEACHy is aligned with Environmental Media Association’s EMA Green Seal program, to which a specific category for students to earn this third-party recognition has been added, which makes it possible for students who attend a school that doesn’t have a sustainability program to use this checklist as a tool to run their own green set and get recognized for it. The PEACHy comprehensive is a list of relevant sustainable production actions broken out by department and category.

Since 2020, 65 AFI Conservatory thesis films have been recognized with the EMA Green Seal, an industry recognized program honoring progress in sustainable production. View a list of those films here.
